Leadership Skills Gained

I feel that my leadership skills have grown in a few ways as a result of completing this study. For one thing others have started to see me as an example. I noticed that during the time I was working on my project and after I presented it at various conferences, that many of my fellow students have come up to me for advice on how they can complete their research more effectively. This stuck out to me because I know that people will always be watching me in my career and in my home. It is important as a leader to set a good example and work hard. I also think an important part of being a leader is putting in long hours in order to make sure the project gets done. At the end of the day, things need to get done and someone has to take responsibility to meet deadlines. I definitely have seen myself developing this skill. A lot of the time during this project, there were things that I knew would take a long time to do such as writing the paper, reviewing the literature and coding the data....

Reflection 2

As I was analyzing my data, I was disappointed to not find as much as I would have liked. I worked so hard on this project and it didn't turn out as well as I thought it would. Unfortunately, that's just a fact of life. Sometimes things go as planned and sometimes they don't. It's what we learn along the way that is really important. In my first reflection, I mentioned that there were some things I would do differently if I were to do this project again. I think that is an important lesson that I learned from doing this project. Research is something that I will probably have to do for the rest of my life. It is important to understand how tricky it is and be okay with not finding a lot of significant results at times. This is why it is important to have things like academic journals and articles be peer reviewed. Researchers can get so caught up thinking that they have such a good idea and that can lead to fudging data. If we didn't have people peer reviewing stu...

Reflection 1

As with all projects, my study has not gone as well as I had hoped. After reflecting lately about what I would do differently if I could go back and do it again, I have come up with a list. 1. Understand my resources better 2. Have a longer timeline 3. Have more wiggle room in my budget What I mean by #1 is that a lot of the resources that I originally thought I could use ended up falling through. Although I went and talked to the Non-traditional student center about helping me get the word out about my study before I started, they did not end up helping. They did let me put up one of my flyers in their center, but they didn't send out an email with the information like I requested and they agreed to do. Another resource that fell through was using my library prints to help me print out materials. I didn't realize just how many prints I needed. It was a ton and I ended up using up all of my print money before I was done getting all of my materials. My last resource that...

The Reason Behind the Blog

Image
The purpose of this website is to use the internet to electronically document my EDGE project. Here you will find my project overview, the details of my project, and the reflections that I will write during then next few months. I hope to use this project to reach my goals of learning how to best strengthen families and marriages. Feel free to explore, comment and leave suggestions! -Dakota

Project Overview

Image
Abstract: This project is an independent research study aiming to determine if positive psychology’s “peak-end theory” can be applied to interpersonal relationships such as marriage. The peak-end theory states that human memory and perception do not result from a culmination every moment of an experience averaged over time. People evaluate an experience based on how they felt at the peak and end of an experience. Conflict is present in almost every marital relationship and can have negative effects on all types of health. This study gives support to the idea that if couples manipulate the peak and end of their marital conflicts, they can improve their perceptions of the conflict, thus increasing marital satisfaction and relational health. The research produced some significant results, thus the possibility of using the peak-end theory to improve marital relationships, as a clinical intervention, may be a reality. +

Larger Purpose

Larger Purpose: I have chosen to do original research as my EDGE project because I feel that it will help me to develop my skills in critical thinking, problem solving, and increase my leadership ability. The research process is hard work. I want to prove to myself that I can do hard things through dedicating time and effort into research that could benefit others, while also building my educational resume and my self-efficacy.
