Leadership Skills Gained
I feel that my leadership skills have grown in a few ways as a result of completing this study. For one thing others have started to see me as an example. I noticed that during the time I was working on my project and after I presented it at various conferences, that many of my fellow students have come up to me for advice on how they can complete their research more effectively. This stuck out to me because I know that people will always be watching me in my career and in my home. It is important as a leader to set a good example and work hard.
I also think an important part of being a leader is putting in long hours in order to make sure the project gets done. At the end of the day, things need to get done and someone has to take responsibility to meet deadlines. I definitely have seen myself developing this skill. A lot of the time during this project, there were things that I knew would take a long time to do such as writing the paper, reviewing the literature and coding the data. It wasn't always fun, but there was no one else that I could delegate this responsibility to, so I had to step and do it myself. It was hard, but I think it has really payed off.
Lastly, the results that I found in my research has influenced me and my ability to be a good leader. I discovered from analyzing my data that taking a break after a conflict is really important for perceptions of the conflict severity. I can apply this to my own life, whether its with my husband, my coworkers, or other people in my life. In the real world, there is conflict, and it's important to know how to deal with it successfully. If I can use this information to make my interpersonal communication skill more effective, I can be a leader in any environment I am in. I also think that my future children will be influenced by the way I react to conflict. I can be a leader to them and help them develop positive ways to communicate with others.
I have definitely learned a lot because of this project and it has strengthened my ability to be a great leader.
